In 1931, Tolkien gave a talk to a literary society entitled ‘A Hobby for the Home’, where he unveiled for the first time to a listening public the art that he had both himself encountered and been involved with since his earliest childhood: ‘the construction of imaginary languages in full or outline for amusement’.

That is an excerpt from Amazon partially describing the contents of the book, A Secret Vice: Tolkien on Invented Languages.

I’m sending this short message to let you know that in next week’s letter, I’ll be exploring how you can use invented languages to make your D&D games more unique, rich, and engaging—just like Tolkien did to enrich Middle-Earth.

I hope you’re as excited to read next week’s letter as I am to write it.

Until next week, here’s a picture of some early lettering for my invented language, “Vinorikan” and its phonetic attributes.
